Among
the Irish, a religious song is not merely a musical event. Like the Irish
soul, it is extraordinarily complex: simultaneously expressing elation
and mourning, regret and hope, fear and joy. The Virgin's Lament
uniquely documents Ireland's thousand-year-old tradition of spiritual
song, a heritage unique in the Western world, joining, both pagan and
Christian elements. Recorded in the pristine acoustical setting of Glenstal
Abbey in Limerick, The Virgin's Lament features two of Ireland's
most precious musical treasures: the angelic soprano Nóirín
Ní Riain, and the stirring voices of the Benedictine monks of Glenstal.
From the Latin plainchant of Dextera Domini to An
Caoineadh, a pagan lament for the dead; from medieval ballads
concerning the "Passion," to the traditional Christmas carol The
Darkest Midnight; here is a blessing for the ears straight from
the "Island of Saints and Scholars." (direct
quote from back of CD jacket) 2. Gol na dTri Muire (The Weeping of the Three Marys) 3. The Darkest Midnight 4. Seacht nDólás na Maighdine Muire - Cúige Chonnacht (The Seven Sorrow of the Virgin Mary I) 5. An Bhainis Phósta a Bhi i gCána (The Wedding Feast of Cana) 6. Seacht nDólás na Maighdine Muire - Cúige Chonnacht (The Seven Sorrows of the Virgin Mary II) 7. An Caoineadgh (The Keen) 8. Caoineadh na hAoine (Friday Lament) 9. Pósadh Naofa Cána 10. Dextera Domini (The Lord's Right Hand) 11. Caoineadh na Maighdine (The Blessed Virgin's Keening) |
